Lovely names

I was trying to find the Yuwaalaraay name for Lightning Ridge but couldn’t. Until, that is, I went to the Lightning Ridge History Society. Wallangulla? I like it, but then I like Lightning Ridge too.

Wallungulla

Wallangulla must be a Yuwaalaraay name. This area is littered with Gamilaraay, Yuwaalaraay and Yuwaalayaay names, which collectively are among the most lyrical place-names in the whole of Australia. We’re not allowed to talk about Rolf Harris any more but in my mind I can feel the low-frequency throb of his wobble board and hear the soft drone of his voice singing names like:

Gunderbooka
Yantabulla
Bobadah
Collaranabri
Weilmaringle
Pallamallawa
Dunedoo
Pangee
Gulargambone

Who can’t help but want to make rhymes with Gunderbooka or Weilmaringle or Pallamallawa?

A special prize is heading out to the composer of the best limerick that uses any of the above place-names. Usual terms and conditions apply.

  1. Collaranabri should be Collarenabri
